Mobile Haptic Interface

Overview

A mobile haptic interface (MHI) refers to a haptic interface with a mobile platform. Its concept is devised to overcome the limited workspace of a common desktop haptic interface, which makes it impossible to render a virtual object larger than the haptic interface workspace. For MHI, workspace can be continuously shifted to a "proper" (i.e., interest region of a user) location owing to the mobility of the platform. As a result, one can interact with virtual environments (VEs) that much larger horizontally than the (original) workspace. Theoretically, the MHI can serve horizontally "unlimited" VEs (it is actually still limited by other reasons such as limitation of physical space or tracking devices). The goal of this project is to develop a novel MHI and its application to large immersive VEs.
